Tamas 1988 film review

In Govind Nahlani's five-hours tamas film (Darkness) based on Bheeshma Sahni's novel, reflected on the riots in Punjab and the politics of the subcontinent during the partition.

The film's screenplay, dialogues were co-written by Govind NihalaniBhisham Sahni

Bheeshma Sahni had witnessed these riots in burning Punjab, he has played the role of Har Naam Singh in this film.

Govind Nihalani has been the top director of Bollywood, to his credit there are masterpieces like  Akrosh 1988, Ardh Satya 1983, and Party 1984.

His family was also divided and the cast of the film includes actors like AK Hangal who witnessed the riots and migration of the subcontinent's partition.

AK Hangal of the Communist Party has played the role of  Congressman Bakhshi G in the film tamas.

In the film, we see the same things in the form of scenes on the screen that we have been reading in fiction written against the background of partition.

History has recorded these bloody events and is still exploring the horrors of history.

The tamas film shows the mindset of the Muslim League in political parties which does not accept the Congress of Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, and Dalits.

Hindus are killed in the neighborhood of Muslims Muslims are killed in the neighborhood of Hindus.

In the opening scene, Nathu Chamar (Om Puri) kills a Pig compensation of five rupees from the contractor (Pankaj Kapoor),  when that is thrown in front of the mosque by a Christian, then terrible riots broke out.

On the one hand, Sardar Jarnail Singh, along with Bakhshi Ji and other Congressmen, is an emotional Gandhian (truth and nonviolence), on the other hand, young boys from organizations like Hindu Sabha are trained to kill.

Their elders forced them by practicing killing chickens to make them terrorists by giving them hate speeches.

They kill old Muslims who sell small things in the neighborhood and also rob their Hindus.

While on the one side shouting slogans of Allah u Akbar, killers come out from the areas of Muslims with swords,  and other side Hindu assassins come out of Hindu areas chanting slogans of Har Har Mahadev.

The Communist Party of India, seeing these riots from a different point of view than the British conspiracy, also sends Muslim non-Muslim comrades to different villages so that possible riots can be prevented with the help of comrades there.

Tamas movie to balance extremist groups on both sides.

On the other hand, the British bureaucracy is portrayed in the role of Deputy Commissioner Richard, who is interested in archeology and Indian civilization. But the officer, who lives in a large mansion, also ignores the riots.

Om Puri is shown in remorse as riots break out. He returns home distraught where his disabled mother and pregnant wife are.

He disturbs his wife by telling her the truth about killing pigs after a big mental struggle but she reassures him that you just killed a pig but someone else threw it.

Om Puri's bad omen is also due to the fear of miscarriage of his pregnant wife.

During riots, the Muslims living in the Hindu quarters who protect them and the Muslims who shift the Hindus safely to a safe place are also shown.

A Shahnawaz Pathan he rescues the Hindu Seth family of Hindu Sabha living in his neighborhood but returns and kills the mentally handicapped servant of the house in his greed for gold from his empty house.

There is a curfew in the city the Communist Party convenes a meeting for peace in the city.

When it comes to publishing a peace appeal, the Muslim League rejects the proposal and it is clear that Congress has accepted the partition plan.

Disappointment spreads in Congress, the riots escalate.

As the madness strikes Congress chief Jarnail Singh, he makes an emotional speech for peace in the city square, repeating over and over again that the partition will be on my body.

And during his speech, someone beheaded him.

Much of the film focuses on anti-Sikh terrorism, including attacks on gurdwara, and Sikh women jumping into wells.

Amrish Puri has played the role of Sikh Sardar Teja Singh in the movie tamas.

Harnam Singh's (Bhisham Sahni) shop is looted and the house is burnt down.

He seeks refuge with his old wife. In a village, a Muslim woman shelters him, but the men want to kill him as soon as he arrives, and the woman manages to get him out safely.

On the way, Om Puri, who has taken refuge with his pregnant wife and mother, is found the mother is dead on the way.

Now all four of them reach a gurdwara the situation is bad here too.

People killing each other ... have reached relief camps.

Harnam Singh, his wife, and Nathu's pregnant wife have also reached the camp.

Nathu's body is found here along with other bodies in the camp.

His pregnant wife gives birth to a child there and the slogans around the film camp ended with the slogans of  Allah u Akbar - Har Har Mahadev.

I hope you all are satisfied with this detailed tamas movie review and I would recommend you all to watch this movie.
